Ad-Deir, or “the monastery,” is the name this building is known by today. Like most of Petra’s remaining buildings, it has gone by many names, few having anything to do with its original purpose. The most recent archaeological data suggest that it was a temple, possibly related to the winter solstice, since the solstice’s setting sun shines directly through the massive door into what may have been an altar area.
